The 5th International Conference for ccTLD registries and registrars of CIS and Eastern Europe opened on 12, September in Montenegro

The 5th International Conference for ccTLD registries and registrars of CIS and Eastern Europe opened on 12, September in Montenegro. This year the Conference hosts more than 100 attendees presenting ccTLD registries and registrars from 32 countries of the world.

The Conference was kicked off by Vujica Lazovic, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister for the Information Society in the Government of Montenegro. In his welcoming speech he emphasized the international status of domain .ME: “We are very happy with the rate of the development of our domain: it turned out that the ratio of domain .ME is growing faster than all others in Europe”, he said. Vujica Lazovic highlighted that the present Conference is an excellent chance to exchange experience with colleagues on the development of national domains. The topic was taken over by Predrag Lesic, CEO of the domain registry .ME who spoke about the influence of the national domain on Internet development in the country.

The welcoming, speech was continued by Andrey Kolesnikov, CEO of Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ. He told about the current state of the Russian Internet market: “We see that today Russian Internet market is the biggest in Europe but we have the potential to grow further. We see the main growth in regions, the process is going and in about 3 years we’ll hit 70% of Internet implementation, he said. Concluding his speech Andrey Kolesnikov presented to the participants of the Conference an Internet game “Explore Internet – Govern It”

Veni Markovski, ICANN, told about ICANN’s activity in Eastern Europe and CIS countries. “I expect the whole Eastern European internet community to take an active part in the work of ICANN and influence our organization”, he said. Veni Markovski emphasized that the activity of Eastern Europe in ICANN must be much higher.

Wim Degezelle,CENTR, in his presentation, told about the activity of this organization. “We are oriented at Europe by interaction not only with registries but with governments and telecommunication administrations of European countries,” he said. Wim Degezelle highlighted the importance of marketing activity in the work of all registries: “Even minor registries provide staff for marketing research; all major European registries have huge marketing departments along with research and analysis.”
